What to Compare

Base Salary

The guaranteed cash you receive regardless of performance or stock price. Enter in local currency (USD for US, EUR/GBP for Europe).

Target Bonus

Enter as a % of salary or fixed amount. Use the target/expected rate β€” not the maximum. Bonus is treated as ordinary income for this estimate.

Annual Equity Value

The annual vesting value of RSUs or options at current prices. For complex schedules (back-loaded, refresher grants), use the calculator above to compute Year 1 value, then copy it here. For private options, apply your own illiquidity discount before entering.

Location, COL & Tax

For US cities: income tax rate and a cost-of-living (COL) adjustment are both applied. The COL-adjusted figure shows what the total package would need to be in a median-cost city to deliver equivalent purchasing power β€” e.g. $200k in San Francisco (COL 1.74) is equivalent to ~$115k nationally. Select a city to see its index.

For European countries: income tax is estimated using each country's verified 2026 effective rate, and local currency is converted at live ECB rates. A COL adjustment equivalent to the US city index is not applied β€” no equivalent cross-country purchasing-power index is in the current dataset.

Equity Tax Treatment

RSU vesting is typically taxed as ordinary income in most jurisdictions. Options gains may qualify for capital gains treatment depending on option type (ISO vs NSO in the US), holding period, and country. This tool uses a blended income tax estimate with a disclaimer β€” consult a tax adviser for precision.

Component Breakdown

A single blended total can obscure where the real difference lies. The comparison table shows base / bonus / equity separately so you can see whether Offer A's advantage comes from salary or equity β€” which matters for risk and negotiation strategy.

Example: High Base vs High Equity, Cross-Currency

Offer A: Berlin, Germany (EUR) β€” High Base

  • Base: €130,000 (~28% effective income tax)
  • Bonus: €19,500 (15%)
  • Annual equity: €20,000
  • Gross total: €169,500
  • Est. take-home: β‰ˆ €122,040

Offer B: Seattle, WA (USD) β€” High Equity

  • Base: $140,000 (no WA state income tax)
  • Bonus: $14,000 (10%)
  • Annual equity: $75,000 (RSU vesting)
  • Gross total: $229,000
  • Est. take-home: β‰ˆ $229,000 (no state tax)

Without the component breakdown, Offer B appears straightforwardly better in converted USD terms. But the breakdown shows Offer A's advantage is a higher guaranteed base (lower risk) while Offer B's lead is almost entirely equity (stock price risk). A candidate who values income stability over upside may prefer Offer A despite the lower gross total.
